Aromatase Inhibitors
Aromatase inhibitors are a class of drugs that block
the formation of estrogen. They are currently FDA approved for
the treatment of certain forms of breast cancer. However, recent
studies indicate a possible role for these drugs in some women
with reproductive problems. They have been used to induce
ovulation in women who are not ovulating. They have also been
used for the treatment of pelvic pain in women with
endometriosis. The two drugs that have been studied in this
context are letrozole (Femara) and anastrazole (arimidex). The
role of aromatase inhibitors in the treatment of women with
reproductive endocrine disorders remains to be established.
Currently it is unclear whether or not they are better than our
existing therapy. We currently offer therapy with these drugs to
women who have not responded to standard treatment.
