Implanon Long Acting Contraceptive Implant
Arkansas Fertility & Gynecology Associates now offers a new
long-acting contraceptive implant, Implanon. This is a progestin
only contraceptive and therefore may be suitable for women in
whom estrogen containing contraceptives cannot be used. Clinical
studies have demonstrated that Implanon is 99% effective in
preventing pregnancy. Implanon consists of a plastic capsule
that measures about 1.5 inches in length. It is inserted just
beneath the skin on the inner aspect of the upper arm. Insertion
is performed in the office and takes only 1-2 minutes. When
inserted at the beginning of the menstrual cycle, it is
effective immediately and provides contraception for up to 3
years. Removal of the implant is also performed in the office
and usually takes less than 5 minutes. Return to fertility after
implant removal is very quick.
Suitable candidates for Implanon include the following:
- women who want a long acting, highly reliable contraceptive
- women who have trouble remembering to take a pill or change a
patch
- women who cannot take birth control pills containing
estrogen.
As with any hormonal contraceptive, there are side
effects with Implanon which you should discuss with your doctor
before deciding upon this form of birth control. Implanon does
not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases; therefore
patients at risk for such diseases are advised to use barrier
contraception in addition to the Implanon. If you would like
more information about this new contraceptive implant, please
call our office and we will arrange for you to speak with one of
our health care providers.
