Embryo Transfer
Procedure Description
Embryo transfer is performed on patients undergoing in vitro
fertilization (IVF). The embryos are transferred either on the
3rd or the 5th day after the egg retrieval. The embryos are
placed in a small catheter which is inserted into your uterus
under ultrasound guidance.
What to Expect
The procedure is generally painless. It is performed in our
office and no anesthesia is required.
Pre-Procedure
You do not need to have an empty stomach prior to this
procedure. You should arrive with a full bladder. A
transabdominal ultrasound will be performed to guide the embryo
transfer. A full bladder makes it easier to see your uterus and
the transfer catheter.
Post-Procedure
You will rest in the recovery room for 30 minutes after the
embryo transfer. You will then be sent home. Someone should
drive you home. Bedrest for the next 2 days is advised. You will
be given specific instructions regarding medications to take and
when to return to the clinic. Infection is a rare complication
after an embryo transfer procedure. If you develop a fever or
severe abdominal pain/swelling, you should contact your
physician.
